Choosing Your Pickleball Overgrip
What is an overgrip, and how is it different from a replacement grip?
An overgrip is an outer wrap applied over a sound base grip to change the contact surface and feel. A replacement grip replaces the base layer underneath. S1, R1 and T1 are overgrips; they do not repair a loose or damaged base grip. Read overgrip vs replacement grip.
Should I choose Smooth, Ribbed or Towel?
Choose S1 Smooth for a thin, tacky PU surface (0.60–0.65 mm); R1 Ribbed for PU with an EVA ridge and a contoured feel (0.75–0.80 mm); or T1 Towel for a thicker cotton textile feel (1.5 mm). These are listed tape thicknesses, not exact increases in handle circumference. See the full three-way comparison.
Which overgrip should I choose for sweaty hands?
Start with your preferred surface and handle size. T1 offers absorbent cotton fabric; S1 offers a smooth tacky feel; R1 adds contour. None guarantees dry hands or no slipping in every condition. Compare the options in our sweaty-hands guide.
Will it fit my paddle?
Check handle length, circumference and your planned overlap against the strip dimensions: S1 is 1,200 × 26 mm, R1 is 1,100 × 25 mm and T1 is 700 × 30 mm. Coverage depends on the handle and wrapping method. Check coverage before trimming or exposing the towel grip's adhesive.
Does an overgrip make the handle bigger?
Yes. Every added layer increases handle size. Thickness, overlap and compression determine the final feel. Start with one layer; if your handle already feels large, consider a thinner wrap rather than stacking grips.
How often should I replace it?
Inspect before each session. Replace when the surface is worn, slick or uncomfortable, the wrap shifts, or a towel surface becomes too saturated or matted for comfortable use. There is no universal two-week interval. Use our replacement checklist.
How do I install it?
Remove the old outer wrap while keeping a sound base grip in place. Wrap upward from the butt end with consistent overlap, check the fit, trim if needed and secure the top with finishing tape. Follow How to Install for the different PU, ribbed and towel steps.
Can I use more than one layer?
You can intentionally build up a handle, but more layers add bulk and can change the definition of its edges. Begin with one fresh layer. Do not keep stacking over worn wraps to avoid replacing them.
Can removal damage the underlying grip?
Adhesive may leave residue or lift a fragile base-grip surface, particularly with an adhesive-backed towel wrap. Remove slowly and follow your paddle manufacturer's guidance. Avoid sharp tools or improvised solvents on the handle.
Can I use a tennis overgrip on a pickleball paddle?
Some can fit, but compare length, width and installation instructions with your paddle handle. Likewise, check dimensions before using a Vantorra overgrip on another racquet-sport handle; fit is not universal.
Which pack size should I buy?
Choose 3 grips to try the feel, or 9, 18 or 36 for more spare wraps once you know your preference. Pack sizes describe quantity, not a guaranteed number of months of use. Check the selected color and quantity before ordering.
