Smooth vs Ribbed vs Towel Pickleball Overgrips

AI illustration comparing smooth black, ribbed blue and yellow towel wraps on generic pickleball paddle handles.

The right pickleball overgrip depends on what you want to change about your handle: its surface feel, its contours or its textile cushioning. Smooth, ribbed and towel wraps are different choices, not a ranking from beginner to advanced.

For Vantorra's current range, start with S1 for a thin, tacky PU surface; R1 for a raised, contoured feel; or T1 for a thicker cotton towel surface. The comparison below uses our listed product specifications, not independent performance-test results.

Compare the three options

Model Material and surface Listed thickness Main trade-off
S1 Smooth PU; smooth, tacky surface 0.60–0.65 mm Thinnest of these three; no raised ridge
R1 Ribbed PU + EVA; micro-perforated surface and integrated ridge 0.75–0.80 mm More pronounced contours; less uniform feel
T1 Towel Cotton towel with adhesive backing 1.5 mm Thick textile feel; more added handle bulk

These are tape specifications, not exact increases in finished grip circumference. Overlap, stretch, compression and your existing base grip all affect the installed result.

When to choose smooth

A smooth wrap suits a player who likes a relatively even contact surface and does not want an intentional raised ridge beneath the fingers. S1 Smooth uses PU and has the thinnest listed profile in this range. It is a useful starting point if your current handle already feels close to the size you want.

Tacky describes the contact feel of the surface. It does not mean the grip will remain equally tacky when wet or worn. If you sweat heavily, assess the wrap after playing in your usual conditions instead of choosing only by how sticky it feels when new. Browse the Smooth Overgrips collection.

When to choose ribbed

R1 Ribbed combines a PU surface with an EVA ridge and micro-perforations. Choose it if you want a more defined contour around the handle. The ridge is a feel preference: some players like the extra tactile reference, while others prefer a flatter surface when changing hand positions.

Wrapping angle and overlap affect where the ridge sits. Keep spacing consistent and check the grip in your usual hand positions before securing the top. Perforations alone are not proof of better sweat performance. See the Ribbed Overgrips collection.

When to choose towel

T1 Towel has a cotton textile surface with a 1.5 mm listed thickness. It is worth considering if you prefer an absorbent fabric feel instead of PU tack and have room for a fuller handle. It is also the shortest strip here: 700 × 30 mm, compared with S1 at 1,200 × 26 mm and R1 at 1,100 × 25 mm.

Cotton can absorb moisture, but a towel grip can still become saturated. It is not a promise of dry hands throughout a session. Check coverage before peeling the adhesive liner, and avoid large overlaps that create bulky seams. Explore the Towel Overgrips collection.

A simple way to choose

  1. Identify your main issue: worn surface, unwanted bulk, lack of contours or a preference for fabric.
  2. Check the base grip. If it is loose or damaged, address that first.
  3. Try one outer layer and a small pack before committing to a larger supply.
  4. Compare comfort, handle size and surface feel in normal practice, including when your hands become damp.

Questions before wrapping

Are these replacement grips? No. These Vantorra products are overgrips for an existing base grip. Read overgrip vs replacement grip if you are unsure which layer needs attention.

Which is best for sweaty hands? There is no universal winner. Compare textile absorption, tack preference and handle size in our sweaty-hands guide.

How do I install one? Follow the installation guide, including the separate notes for thin PU, ribbed and adhesive-backed towel wraps. Replace the outer wrap based on its condition, not a fixed calendar.
