Overgrip vs Replacement Grip for Pickleball

An overgrip goes over an existing paddle grip. A replacement grip takes the place of the base grip underneath. If you want to refresh the surface you hold, an overgrip may be enough. If the base grip itself is damaged, loose or no longer comfortable, covering it with another layer is not the same as repairing it.

What each layer does

The base grip sits around the handle and provides the foundation for its feel and shape. A replacement grip is intended to replace that layer, following the paddle and grip manufacturers' instructions. An overgrip is a replaceable outer wrap used to change the contact surface, texture or feel while leaving a sound base grip in place.

Thickness alone does not identify the category. Some towel overgrips are thicker than thin PU overgrips, but that does not automatically make them substitutes for the original base grip. Check the product's stated purpose rather than treating all grip tape as interchangeable.

Choose an overgrip when the foundation is sound

  • The underlying grip is secure, but its contact surface no longer feels how you want.
  • You want to try a tacky, ribbed or textile outer layer.
  • You can comfortably accommodate a larger handle after adding the wrap.
  • You want an outer layer you can replace as it wears.

Remove an old overgrip before adding the new one unless you intentionally want extra layers. Repeatedly wrapping over worn layers can leave a handle bulky and uneven. If you cannot tell which layer is the factory grip, check the paddle's instructions before peeling further.

Choose a replacement grip when the base needs attention

Inspect the base after taking off the old outer wrap. A grip that moves around the handle, has torn sections or has uneven, compressed cushioning may need replacing. A new overgrip can conceal these problems without fixing them. If the actual handle or butt cap feels loose, stop and contact the paddle manufacturer; grip tape is not a structural repair.

Replacing the base requires a compatible product and careful installation. Removing adhesive can lift a fragile grip surface or leave residue, so work slowly and avoid improvised solvents. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the paddle materials involved.

Does an overgrip change paddle grip size?

Yes. Adding material around the handle increases its size, though the exact change depends on the wrap thickness, overlap and compression. Listed tape thickness is not the same measurement as finished handle circumference. A thick wrap or a wide overlap can also soften the definition of the handle edges.

Start with one layer. Hold the paddle in your usual playing positions before trimming the final end. If the handle feels too large, consider a thinner overgrip or a more suitable base-grip setup; do not assume stretching a thick wrap aggressively will solve the fit.

Where Vantorra S1, R1 and T1 fit

All three are sold as overgrips. S1 Smooth is a 0.60–0.65 mm PU wrap; R1 Ribbed uses PU and an EVA ridge at a listed 0.75–0.80 mm; T1 Towel has a cotton surface with adhesive backing and a listed 1.5 mm thickness. These specifications describe the products, not measured performance differences.

Browse smooth, ribbed or towel overgrips, or use the three-way comparison to match a surface to your preference.

Can you use a tennis overgrip on a pickleball paddle?

Some tennis overgrips can fit, but check their length, width, intended installation and your handle dimensions. A label for another sport does not guarantee coverage or the feel you want. Trim excess only after checking the full wrap; do not assume every strip can cover two handles.

Before you start

Identify the layer being replaced, confirm the base is sound and dry, and keep finishing tape and scissors ready. Our step-by-step installation guide explains how to wrap Vantorra overgrips without removing a sound base grip. For ongoing care, use the replacement checklist instead of relying on a universal schedule.
